Fun in the Sun with a Tandem Insulin Pump

Tandem Diabetes Care insulin pumps have some great features that will help you keep pumping as the weather gets warmer throughout the summer. Here are some cool tips to keep your pump safe and clean as you launch into your adventures.

Playing it Safe

Summertime can be tough on your pump or infusion sets. Follow these tips to keep your pump clean and safe, and your infusion sets securely attached:

  • Keep your pump away from sunscreen, lotions, or bug spray, and wash your hands after applying these products and before touching your pump
  • You may need to use adhesive wipes or tape to keep your infusion sets secured to your skin in areas with more moisture or rubbing
  • You can use a damp cloth and, if needed, a small amount of mild soap to wipe the pump clean*

Keeping it Cool

The Tandem Mobi system and the t:slim X2 insulin pump are the only pumps with a temperature sensor that will alarm when the temperature inside the pump is too high.

Here are some key points about this feature:

  • Tandem insulin pumps will alert if an extreme internal temperature (below -31˚F [-35˚C] or above 176˚F [80˚C]) is detected. At that time, insulin delivery will be stopped. This alert is designed to protect you from using insulin that may not work well.
  • When the alarm sounds, the pump needs to be removed from the source of extreme temperature before insulin delivery can be resumed.
  • While the temperature alarm is designed to help you keep your insulin at a safe temperature, your pump hardware has been tested and proven to be functional in a wide range of temperatures (-4˚F [-20˚C] to 140˚F [60˚C])

Resistant to Splashes

Tandem Mobi is water-resistant (IP28 rating), tested to a depth of 8 feet for up to 2 hours. The t:slim X2 insulin pump is watertight (IP27 rating), tested to a depth of three feet for up to 30 minutes.

This means that you can breathe easier if you accidentally splash your Tandem pump. However, we recommend that you disconnect from your pump at your infusion site any time you get in water, for bathing, sports, or relaxing. When you disconnect, be sure to place your pump in a cool, secure location away from direct sunlight where it can't get wet.
