Differences Between Basal-IQ and Control-IQ Technology

Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems automatically adjust insulin delivery based on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)* readings. These systems can help people living with diabetes better manage their blood glucose levels, reduce the risk of hypo and hyperglycemia, and improve overall quality of life. Tandem Diabetes Care offers two different AID systems: Basal‑IQ technology and Control-IQ technology.

Important: Basal-IQ technology was discontinued as of December 2023. We will continue to maintain these support articles for in-warranty t:slim X2 insulin pumps with Basal-IQ technology. To learn about potential requirements for upgrading to Control-IQ technology, visit our Software Update resources.

Man Looking at Automatic Correction Bolus on t:slim X2 Insulin Pump

Basal-IQ Technology

Basal-IQ technology helps reduce the frequency and duration of low-glucose events by predicting glucose levels 30 minutes ahead and suspending all insulin delivery (both basal and bolus) when sensor glucose is expected to drop below 80 mg/dL. Insulin delivery automatically resumes as soon as the sensor glucose values begin to rise.

Control-IQ Technology

Control‑IQ technology is designed to help increase time in range (70-180 mg/dL) by predicting glucose levels 30 minutes ahead and automatically adjusting insulin delivery every 5 minutes. Icons on the pump screen indicate when insulin dosing is increasing, decreasing, or being stopped by the system. Insulin delivery automatically resumes as soon as the sensor glucose values begin to rise.

Control-IQ technology can also deliver an automatic correction bolus (up to one per hour) to help prevent hyperglycemia.
