An infusion set is a complete tubing system, changed every 2-3 days, which delivers insulin from the Tandem Diabetes Care insulin pump to your body.
An infusion set consists of the three main components:
Your healthcare provider or pump trainer will help you determine which infusion set is right for you. Site location preference, your body size, and your activity level should all be considered when selecting an infusion set.
Infusion Set Cannula
A very small, steel needle or soft tube (cannula) is inserted into the fatty tissue beneath the skin and secured with an adhesive patch. Insulin is delivered subcutaneously through this infusion set site.
The AutoSoft XC, AutoSoft 90, and AutoSoft 30 infusion sets come with disposable, spring-loaded insertion devices that help insert the cannula while keeping the needle hidden. These devices are easy to use and are a popular choice for those who prefer not to insert the needle manually (like with VariSoft or TruSteel infusion sets). Your healthcare provider or pump trainer can help guide you in inserting the cannula.
Angled Cannula
- 30-degree insertion angle or variable insertion angle (20°-45°)
- 13 or 17 mm flexible soft cannula
- Automatic insertion device or manual insertion
- The larger adhesive patch and longer, angled cannula provide greater stability, making this set an excellent choice for slender and active users.
90-Degree Cannula
- 90-degree insertion angle
- 6 or 9 mm flexible soft cannula
- Automatic insertion device
- Users are able to insert the device in hard-to-reach areas with one hand
Stainless Steel Needle
- 90-degree insertion angle
- 6 or 8 mm needle
- 29-gauge stainless steel needle
- Manual insertion
- A great option for users with vision impairments, arthritis, low hand strength, or a history of kinked cannulas. Also suitable for those with allergies to plastic.
Tubing
Insulin flows from the insulin pump through thin, flexible tubing. This tubing connects to the plastic housing of the infusion set site, allowing you to easily disconnect when removing the pump for short intervals.
Tubing is available in various lengths (23, 32, and 43 inches). The length you choose will depend on factors such as your height, whether you wear your Tandem pump inside or outside your clothing, how you wear it while sleeping, and other personal preferences and daily activities.
Tubing Lock Connector
The connector locks the tubing to your pump cartridge. On Tandem Diabetes Care insulin pumps, this is known as the t:lock connector.
