The insulin level appears in the top right corner of the t:slim X2 insulin pump and displays the current units of insulin in the cartridge. Each time the t:slim X2 pump delivers insulin (e.g., bolus), the indicator is updated, five units at a time. When fewer than 40 units remain in the cartridge, the indicator will decrease, one unit at a time.
Fill Estimate
After completing a cartridge load process, the pump estimates the amount of insulin in the cartridge. This “fill estimate” will be lower than the units of insulin added to the cartridge. The pump will display either +60, +120, +180, or +240 units, depending on how much insulin was added.
After 10 units of insulin are delivered, the “+” in front of the displayed value will go away. If the fill estimate is lower than the actual level of insulin in the cartridge, the displayed value will remain unchanged until the insulin level in the cartridge falls below the estimate.
Inconsistent Insulin Level
The insulin level displayed on the pump only includes the amount of insulin that is ready for delivery. A small amount of insulin will remain in the cartridge that cannot get squeezed out, much like a tube of toothpaste. Additionally, some insulin stays in the infusion set tubing, depending on its length.
To ensure you have the desired amount of insulin available for delivery, consider adding around 45 extra units when filling your cartridge. For example, if you think you will use 100 units of insulin before your next cartridge fill in 2-3 days, it is a good idea to fill the cartridge with about 145 units.
